だるまの「目」は、いつから白くなったのでしょう？

日々店舗でお客様とだるまさんの「目」について遣り取りする中で、ホームページでも簡単にお伝えできればと考え、ここに紹介させていただきました。少しでも皆様のモヤモヤっとした疑問が解消されれば嬉しいです！

■史料から分かっていること...

現在では、願いを込めて片目を入れ、願いが叶ったらもう片方の目を入れる「目入れ」の風習がよく知られています。

ですが、だるまさんが昔から目のない姿だったわけではありません。達磨大師を描いた古い絵画には、鋭く大きな両眼を持つ姿が描かれています。

また、江戸時代には天然痘（疱瘡）がたびたび流行し、「目」が特に大切なものとして意識される中で、だるまの目にも特別な意味が持たれるようになったと伝えられています。

やがて、目を描かずに販売し、お客様の求めに応じて目を入れるだるまも広まり、それが後の「目入れ」の風習へとつながったとする説があります。ただ、「目なしだるま」がいつ、どこで、どのような理由から生まれたのかについては、まだ分からないこともあります。

What Historical Sources Tell Us...

Today, many people are familiar with the custom of painting in one eye when making a wish and the other when that wish comes true.

But Daruma dolls did not always have blank eyes. Older paintings of Bodhidharma, the figure who inspired the Daruma, depict him with large, intense eyes. During the Edo period, smallpox repeatedly spread through communities, and the eyes were considered especially important. Daruma’s eyes also came to carry particular significance. Historical accounts tell us that eyeless Daruma were sold and, in some cases, the eyes were painted according to the customer’s wishes. This practice is believed to have contributed to the eye-painting customs we know today. However, exactly when, where, and why eyeless Daruma first appeared is not entirely clear.

■だるま職人として考えること...

ここからは史実ではなく、日々だるまを作っている職人としての我々の考察です。だるまの顔を描く中で、最も難しく、最も神経を使う工程の一つが「黒眼」です。少し凹凸があり、丸く湾曲した張子の表面に、筆で美しい円を描く。左右の大きさを揃え、楕円にならないようにしながら、

寄り目にも上目遣いにもならず、まっすぐ正面を見つめるように仕上げる——ほんのわずかな違いで、だるまの表情は大きく変わります。

天然痘除けなどを背景にだるまへの需要が高まり、多くのだるまを作る必要があった時代、職人たちはどのようにこの難しい「目」を描いていたのでしょう。もしかすると、白目までを職人が仕上げ、最後の黒眼を持ち主自身に託すという方法には、お客様の願いや好みに応えるだけでなく、

ものづくりの現場ならではの理由もあったのかもしれません。もちろん、これは史料で確認された事実ではありません。けれど、毎日だるまの目を描いているからこそ、昔の職人たちも同じように一筆一筆に神経を集中させていたのではないか、——そんなことを想像します。

昔の職人から今の職人へ。そして最後の一筆を、だるまを手にしたあなたへ。

そう考えると、「目入れ」という習慣が、少し違って見えてくるような気がします。

A Daruma Artisan’s Perspective...

From here, I would like to share my own thoughts—not as established historical fact, but as someone who makes and paints Daruma today.

One of the most difficult and delicate parts of painting a Daruma is the black pupil.

With a brush, we must create a clean circle on a slightly uneven, curved papier-mâché surface. Both pupils need to be similar in size and carefully positioned so that the Daruma looks straight ahead—not cross-eyed, not upward, but directly at you.

Even the smallest difference can completely change a Daruma’s expression.

At a time when demand for Daruma was growing, partly because of beliefs surrounding protection from smallpox, artisans would have needed to produce many dolls. I sometimes wonder how they approached this particularly demanding final step.

Perhaps leaving the pupils blank and allowing the owner to paint them was not only a way of responding to each customer’s wishes. There may also have been practical reasons rooted in the realities of making Daruma by hand.

There is no historical evidence that proves this idea, so it remains simply my perspective as a Daruma artisan.

But because I paint Daruma eyes myself every day, I cannot help imagining the artisans of the past concentrating on those same tiny, careful brushstrokes.

From the artisans of the past, to the artisans of today—and finally, one last brushstroke entrusted to you.

Seen this way, perhaps the tradition of painting Daruma’s eyes takes on a slightly different meaning.
